Plumbing emergency? Don’t be overwhelmed. Here are 5 things you can do while waiting for your plumber to arrive:
Shut OFF Water Supply
If there is a leak or clog, don’t let water flow through your pipes. Try shutting the valve OFF for the fixture that’s leaking or clogged. If you don’t find a valve, turn OFF the main water supply near your water meter.
Turn OFF Electricity
Running an empty water heater can damage the tank. Turn OFF water heater by flipping breaker in the main electrical box. Do the same with other appliances that may come into contact with water. Safety First: Skip this if there’s standing water near the electric box.
Drain Liquid from Lines
After water supply is shut off, residual liquid is still left in pipes. Go outside, turn on all the hoses or spigots to completely purge water from the system. This may help with insurance claim and can also help the plumber. Water can ruin flooring, drywall, and cause mold to develop. Get rid of standing water – turn ON fans, OPEN the windows & doors, use a mop or towels.
Take Photos/Video
Quickly take photos/video. This may help with an insurance claim and can also help the plumber.
