How Do I Prevent Clogged Drains in My Commercial Kitchen & Bathrooms?

The Situation:

We were recently called to an Assisted Living property. Their kitchen floor drains started backing up. We quickly found that there was oil and grease buildup inside the piping.

The Solution:

We took our hydrojetter out there and we were able to jet out the piping – It breaks up the grease really well and cleans the inside of the pipe wall to wall (unlike a conventional drain snake).

Snake vs Jetting

The snake device really just likes to sit on the bottom of the pipe. The cutting head on a snake machine is usually only an inch and a half in diameter; so if the pipe is 4″ (for example), you’re only poking a hole through the blockage. Especially when you’re dealing with grease or roots, you want to make sure the pipe is cleaned wall to wall!! The jetter thoroughly clears the pipe.

How do you know the blockage is removed?

At Trinity Plumbing, we always follow any drain cleaning with a camera inspection – This allows us to see visually that the pipe is cleaned and opened up to accept full capacity and usage.

How to avoid clogged drains?

As a business, there are a few items you want to make sure you prevent being used or done in the kitchen and bathroom to avoid clogged drains….

Prevent Clogs in a Commercial Bathroom

When it comes to the bathroom, you want to make sure that nothing more than human waste and toilet paper are going down the toilet.

Trinity Tip: Signs for feminine products is a big deal, making sure that people are aware not to flush those down the toilet.

Trinity Tip: Position paper towel holders near trash cans so people don’t dry their hands and throw the paper towel into the urinal or toilet.

Prevent Clogs in a Commercial Kitchen

In a commercial kitchen atmosphere, you want to make sure that there are no oils or grease being poured down the drain. You want to make sure that plates are always cleaned into a trash can and not into the sink – that gets most of the food debris and oils off early (so you don’t wash them into the drain system).

Grease is Destructive and Costly

Grease and oil builds up over time and becomes almost like brick inside of piping – and it is very hard to clear out. So, if you do nothing else, make sure you minimize the oil and grease input into your drain system.

Are your commercial drains clogged and need cleaned?

We offer regular maintenance to keep your drains (and business) flowing. If you have an emergency clog, pick up the phone and contact us immediately.
